Setting up FCPX - keep system drive clean

Hi guys,

I'm about to setup a fresh Mac with FCPX. Now, before I start to do anything with it, I hope to set up the system in a way that will keep the system drive completely clean. I want all media, events etc. to be on an external drive. Only the program may run from this drive. I don't want any surprise/hidden copies cluttering the system drive, but I'm still having a hard time seeing what is going on. I've been going through some resources on media management, but I feel these are all more once you need to back-up or take it to another system. I'm looking for help or resources how to set up the system from scratch properly. Can anyone give me some pointers or a link to where I can find more? I'm probably not the first to ask :)

Thanks in advance.

It's pretty simple to do this. Anytime you make a new Project or EVent, just make sure you are selecting the external drive in the Project or Event Library. Then the files and media and everything else associated with it will automatically go only to that location.

Thanks Noah. Do I understand correctly that means that if it creates optimized media/proxys and render files, these all automatically go to the same place on the external disc?

They will go into subfolders within the Event folder. So if you make an Event on an External drive, that's where all of that will go.
