setting up DVX100a with a 302 SD mixer

Well, i've been snooping around the audio forum for quite awhile now and got some great advice. I wish i would have checked out the info. here sooner but here is where things stand and what i need help with...

I've been working on a documentary for 3 years now. Due to the tight budget i had to handle the audio on my own for the most part and started out with some decent equipment. I have a Sennheiser ME66, Audio Technica AT897, Sennheiser ew100 Lav, a couple of Shure lavs, boom, softie and a shock mount.

After doing my research here i went out and got something i think i've needed for a long time, a Sound Devices 302 mixer. I'm also going to go out and get the Audio Technica 4073a mic next. What i really need help with right now though is setting up the mixer with my DVX100 camera properly and any tips on using both.

Please do keep in mind that i am a newbie and a basic step by step set up would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Thanks for the link, it did help but like i had mentioned i am a complete newbie...unfortunately. I guess the first issue i'm having is figuring out how to set the tone on the 302 to +4DB...i've gone through the instructional manual and got as far as pressing the PK/VU button until i get the light to go to the +4 led...now how do i set that and do i have to do it to the right channel as well because the left channel led's only light up...

thanks for any help

sorry, i'm not really clear as to what "complite all the menues" means....how would i go about doing this?

I've also read that the settings on the DVX for the mic should be set to Line. Which works fine with my wireless lav but i get a really low signal from my ME66. When i set the ME66 to mic it sounds a lot better.

Thanks again for any advice and or suggestions...

to memorize your setting s you have to go until the end
wht does it have in comon - if you hook the mixer use mice inputs for wierless and the sennheiser if you conect staright use mic setting on the camera

Page 16, last paragraph under "Setup Example"

I have to say that part of manual is poorly written since this critical step in the operation is only mentioned under the "example" instead of in a step by step "general" instructions. Many people will skip reading the examples in a manual if they think they get it already.

Good luck

Hey guys,

i tried your suggestions and think i got through the first step. I went into the internal menu, pressed the PK/VU button until the LED was on +4. The i quckly pressed the same but a few times until the LED's "danced". I'm assuming this step was done correctly.

I then shut the unit off and went back into the internal menu. I tried pressing the brightness and battery buttons to set the +8 limiters and +18 attenuation. The problem i'm having is that when i press the buttons the LED doesn't go past the 0 mark. I'm assuming i'm doing this incorrectly. How do i set this up and how do i set up the attenuation and limiters separately?

That's as far as i've gotten so far so i haven't even tried generating tone as of yet. I agree, the manual is not the most user friendly.

Thanks for your help!

THE MANUALS ARE USER FRIENDLY FOR SOUNDMAN , IS QUIT PROBLEMATIC for ANEW BUY , SORRY WHY DID YOU BUY SOMETHING YOU HAVE NO CLEW HOW IT WORKS - IF YOU BOUGHT IT FROM GOOD AUDIO DEALER ASK HIM TO WAIST A FEW MINUTES ON THE PHONE EXPLAIN YOU HOW DOES IT WORKS ,

OK, my first question is why do you want your oscillator at +4? 0 should work fine, its just a reference tone.

Also, the manual does give you all the info you need. Keep in mind that once you are in the set up menu the PK/VU button cycles your through the menus, that is all. The LED brightness button and the Battery button are what change the values. LED button for down and Battery button for up. Also, each menu has its own menu number which is indicated by which led is lit on the Left channel. Page 21 gives a run down of each meter position and its corresponding menu. To save a value, or "set" what you have changed, you simply press the PK/VU button to cycle through all of the menus and once you have reached the last one the LED's will dance and you will be taken out of the setup menu. The PK/VU button can only advance to the next menu, you cannot go backwards to the previous menu, if you missed it you have to shut it down and start over.

I hope this helps. I just learned all of the this a week ago so its still fresh. Like I said its all in the manual.

Hey Droog,

thanks so much for the info.! The reason i set my oscillator to +4 is because that's what someone in the other post suggested. I'll give your suggestions a try tonight and see if i have any further questions...
