Setting up an edit system properly?

Hi,
I have a dual g4 I am upgrading to dualg5.
I will be setting up an SATA raid system and was wondering about storing all my photos and itunes music (over 60GB worth). Ideally is this ok to keep on the boot drive (obviously I want to keep the Raid for video only).
Just wondering what people normally do...perhaps an external firewire is a good idea for photos/music.
Or does it really matter (when it comes to speed)? Basically I want the system to run optimally while serving dual purpose (personal and business).
Thanks for any comments/input.

If you want to back-up your 60G of music and such, just create a directory out on your RAID or external firewire drive and copy it.

It's OK to keep your music and photos on your boot drive if you have the space for it all. Personally, I keep all my tunes on an external firewire drive. If I'm on the road, I'm listening to my iPod. If I'm home, I'm plugged in. There's no reason to suck up precious internal drive space with music. But that's just me... I have a LOT of music.

I think the only time speed becomes an issue is when your boot drive starts getting fragmented. That'll gum things up noticeably. Regardless of how many mp3s or photots you have on your machine, you'll have smoother sailing if you keep up with your regularly scheduled drive maintenance. (You do regularly scheduled drive maintenance, right?)

speaking of which, how do you move your itunes music to the external? can i just drag and drop in into the external and from then on it will all automatically go there or is there something to do in preferences?

Go to your MUSIC--iTUNES--iTUNES MUSIC folder and copy it over. Then open iTunes preferences and point it to the right place. Then move your original folder somewhere else (like the trash, but don't delete it). The try playing something. iTunes will have to re-find or re-link it, but once it knows where everything is, it's safe to delete the original.
