setting up a business regarding film...

Hey all, hopefully i'll do a post this time that doesn't totally upset someone

I was at a Chemistry convention for extra credit for a class about a month back when I saw someone with an FX 1 that was still in high school. I found this amazing, but noted that I'm kinda hoping to get a HVX, but that's besides the point. He commented to my mother who talked to him as well (I'm only 16, which will come up later) that he had made back what he spent on the camera using the camera.

Now, my age preventing me from full time work, but still desiring a nice camera (god, how horrible it is to watch all of this footage online, and then go home to my five year old Sony MiniDV cam), my mom thought i should try to find work with the camera and then i could pay her back should she buy it. Problem is i'm not very "connected" as of yet, so I need to find a way to start a small time videography business from scrath and make at least around 6 grand to make up for the camera.

I'm sure many of you guys do this as well or have a film related job (NBCShooter seems pretty obvious), so I was wondering if you could give me advice on this stuff.

I love my little Sony DV cam, but at this junction in life, I'd really really really really really like a HVX. But really, who doesn't on this board? I'm stating the obvious. I'd really appreciate your help with this, and every idea is welcome.

I'm around San Diego, in that area, if that helps in advice at all.

Thanks

Dude..i feel the SAME WAY!!

LOL!!

jus no video business for me..im to lazy for that.

I'm working with a really crappy handycam..and wanting a new camera...but i struck a deal wit my dad...If i could atleast keep only A's and B's this school year..no C's or nething...he would buy me a new camera.

ask your parents about suttin like that..

ur 16...go work at subway...im only 15...and i had a job at a subway...not the greatest job..but..atleast you make money.

Yeah, i've been trying to find a job, but no one's hiring. I apply at the wrong times. For example, i applied to a theater a week after harry potter came out, which is the obvious time of hiring new people (they hired four to be precise), but it was the one week where i couldn't apply under circumstances.

And dude, all A's for me is expected. I can't bargain with that much money when I already have a 4.8 gpa. It's kinda a drag.

4.8 GPA??!?!?!

GIVE ME YOUR BRAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

...good thing im not that smart...or i would be stuck liek you....lol

....get a job at like a science lab or suttin...haha

try working at like a resteraunt...be a waitor or busboy....they make money on tips....and depending on the resteraunt...gooooood tips too.

Ok dude, you can have my brain for a while, but I'm gonna have to take your LP Custom as collateral :)

... I'm gonna try and bump this as quietly as possible, just cuz I really need advice with this.

My LP Custom...thats my baby!! I could never use that for collateral.

think of it this way..

would you share wife with other people? ..obviously no...so that's why i wouldnt share my guitar..im married to it.

...but spencer...i still need ur brain.....

Try working on your writing skills. You'll get nowhere without them.

my writing skills are fine...I just dont feel like typing proper words on here.

Spencer, marketing is the hardest part of the game. No one will hire you if they don't know who you are.

Talk to relatives. Do things for free, the kinds of things you want to be hired to do, like weddings -- or whatever events you might want to shoot. Practice. Build a reel of work to show potential clients, and also try to build a reputation. You'll find that word of mouth works if you're giving people more than they expect.

But get out there and do it, even if you can't do it with a DVX or HVX at first. In order to convince strangers to give you money for a product, you need to show them what they'll be getting for the money. Don't expect to make much of anything at first -- you're too green. But as you get better, you can charge more.

Also, once you get to that point, don't be afraid to look someone in the eye and tell them how much something will cost.
