Setting Tone on DVX

I am probably asking a stupid question, but I just need the answer.

I have not been able to find out how to set the tone on the DVX.

In discussing mixer and camera settings, Oleg suggested that you should place the tone on the DVX at -20 dbfs, which works out to be the fourth white dot from the last red one. But, I have not found out how to do this on the camera.

We shot some footage today and everything turned out great except the sound was a bit soft. I imagine we can bring it up in the edit, but I think that it may be due to the fact that we weren't able to set the tone on the camera.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin.

well, there is no tone generator on the DVX, you need to feed it from a mixer or some similar device, then just set your levels accordingly.

What he said.

If you want the easy answer then do some rehearsal dialog that sort of covers the dynamic range of the scene... watch the meters... aim for 3 reds lit on the peaks... trust me, you'll be happy.

Also... get the mics close... it makes all the difference for vocal detail and intimacy. It's better to be at the edge of the frame with the mic and back if off if you want more room character... then to shoot with the mic too far away. I know some people who mention things like acoustic perspective... but it's rare that people have too much of a studio sound on their projects... so unless you keep having that problem, where your location sound is being mistaken for ADR... then get the mics close... and remember, 3 reds on the peaks.
