So i have never used my dvd studio pro or made a sequence that ended up on DVD.

Jus some old test footage i have been working on for the band i work for to check out. Im putting to together a few of the songs i filmed and want it to end up on a DVD for viewing. Once my timeline is square and im happy where do i want to send it or how do i want to export my sequence?

Thanks

There are a few ways.

For something really quick and if you have FCP7, you can use File > Share and select DVD. This will encode your video and burn it onto a DVD. This is quick and easy.

The longer route with more options:

File > Export > QuickTime Movie. Use current settings, check "Make Movie Self-Contained" (you don't have to do it, but in my experience there are less unexpected problems when you work with self-contained clips than referenced ones).

Open Compressor and add the exported file. In the Settings window, select Apple > DVD and then pick a preset that matches the best. For example, if it a short clip, you can go with DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes (this will do a high quality two-pass encoding). Drag the settings (either the whole folder or both of the presets in it) on to your file in Compressor and press "Submit". Play with different settings till you are happy with the results (use a short clip instead of your full video). Once you become more familiar with the process you can start modifying the presets and create your own.

After the encoding is finished (it might take a lot of time depending on the length of your video and what preset you picked), you'll end up with 2 files: an .m2v (video) and .ac3 (audio).

You can now import those files (they will act as one "track" as long as their names match, which is default) for use in DVD Studio Pro where you can create the DVD menu, etc.

FC studio 5.1 here so i dont think i can do the share option, ill look thoough...

Thanks for the steps though :dankk2:

So i got all the way to compressor and started letting that do its thing and i checked my hardware and ican even burn DVD's hahaha so how can i put it on a regular disk and it be playable on a computer??? And still fit so under 700 some MB, its about 4 min long clip...

Thanks

File-> Export -> "Almost any setting" (mp4 is popular)

When done you can do one of the following.
  • Double Click on File
  • Right Click and select "Open" or "Open with"
  • Open a Video program installed on computer and select your file via the menu options
  • Drag and Drop your file into the icon for a Video player on your computer

You can also use Compressor for that.

Instead of picking the DVD presets, open the Web presets folder and try some of the H.264 presets (for me they are in Apple > Other Workflows > Web > Download > Quicktime 7 compatible but if I remember the folder structure in FCP5 was slightly different).

H.264 is a very good codec but you need a decent computer to play it and it might take longer to encode than other formats so try it on a shorter clip before committing.

Also, the person who will receive the file on the disk must have Quicktime installed to play it.

If it's a 4 min clip, you can put it online, maybe on Vimeo or YouTube and just send the link (you can make videos private on YouTube so only people you send the link to can see it).
