Setting Drop Frame or Non-Drop Frame

Hello Oh Wise and Kind Gurus:

I have done plenty of homework both here and on other forums/ manuals/ tutorials, but I'm still foggy about choosing DF or NDF for my capture setting. I understand the basics of what DF and NDF mean, but I'm wondering about implications during both editing and output.

Background info:
I'm doing a documentary (not my first) with 6 hours shot on a DVX100 at 24p adv; so far 80 hours shot on a DVX100a at 24p (F5); will be importing 60i archival footage using a Nattress plug-in. I went CRAZY figuring out whether to use a 23.98 or 29.97 timeline, but I've landed on the 23.98 ~ more work for me, but I believe it to be the correct choice for the project. As such, I will probably shoot any additional footage at 24p adv.

I am working with FCP 5, and as I am NOT an editor, my intention is to log, capture and organize my footage. You editors out there are both artists and uber-technicians as far as I'm concerned. However, I have to save some $ and I like getting to know my footage well, so I'm doing the capture/log/organize. I just don't want to make any huge mistakes so I've been very deliberate in my workflow and FCP planning. The last thing that may be relevant is that I'm using a Sony DSR-20 deck to capture, and when the owner takes that away, I'm going to rent a friend's DSR-11.

With that said, here's the problemo:
What if you don't know if something was shot in DF or NDF? Yikes!

If I set the whole thing for NDF, and something was shot as DF, what might occur (or vice-versa)? Should I be scared since I have no idea which one I should go with?!

I shot most of the footage myself, and am humbled and embarrassed to say I don't know if it was DF or NDF. Don't remember setting that. Not sure if you get the : and ; variations if I put a tape into the deck or if that just shows up after capture, that would be one way to tell. Obviously I will not know what the archival footage was shot at - some will be on standard interlaced DV and some will come from an archival footage house, which tend to offer Digibeta, BetaSP, and DVCam as options.

I have read that you can easily use footage from either DF or NDF on the same timeline, and I'm hoping that goes for a 23.98 timeline as well as a 29.97 timeline.

Feeling a little stupid but better I ask, I suppose -

thank you for any brilliant insights and/or advice.

thank you for balancing my verbose question with that succinct answer
(and by the way I have learned so much your book and DVD, gracias)

I assume I can pull in my 60i footage using NDF, will just double check the df/ndf setting since and make sure it's at ndf.

also assuming it's not a big deal, that i shouldn't get all crazy about this.

i think my life might be easier if i just went with a 29.97 timeline, but i've had two post-production house producers tell me to edit on a 23.98 timeline whether or not i'm going to film, so i'm relying on their advice.

again, thanks!
