Setting black bars for simulated aspect ratio

I know this has been asked, but I'm not having much luck finding it.

I'm using Sony Vegas Pro 8.0c.

I have footage shot on a DVX100a. Some of it was shot in 16:9 (not 'squeeze') and the rest in 4:3.

I know I can add black bars at the top and bottom of the 4:3 footage so it will match the bars on the 16:9. I did it once, but it was a long time ago and was in Premiere 6.

Can someone tell me the quick, easy way to add the horizontal black bars at top and bottom? And how wide they need to be?

Thanks so much! Happy New Year!

I appreciate it, but these all seem to either be HD templates. I need a template for a 4:3 (SD) frame that will simulate the cropping of a 16:9 frame.
Just a thought, I haven't use Vegas in years, but can't you simply put the 4x3 footage in a 16x9 timeline, and use the Pan/Crop feature? As the 4x3 footage won't fill the entire frame, by zooming in till the side edges fits, you'll get the proper ratio.

Brilliant! Thanks man!

Just keep in mind, if you're going to make an anamorphic DVD out of it, it won't look right. The black of the bars will be 0. You want RGB 16, 16, 16.

You can do this by making a 16, 16,16 color card and putting it under all of the other footage, or by using a fade envelope and making the bottom color 16, 16, 16. Either way, the video track should be at the bottom.
