My friend that all depends on what you have in your DVX (i.e. Mattebox, 5 hr batt, open LCD vs closed, etc.) so there is no magic formula setting that works for all. The Glidecam manual and the DVD that comes with your purchase shows and explain how to set and balance your rig to get good results. I have the 4000 Pro and I have to re-balance differently when I stick the 5 hr batt etc. Also, tip, do not start moving very fast or stop all of a sudden, let the rig overcome the inertia, otherwise you will get the tilting down/up pitching left/right issues. I hope that would help with your question!

Cheers!

Yes there is NO formula as every minute ounce can throw the rig off. Just be patient and follow the directions. It took me an hour to properly balance mine the first time and that was without the Mattebox and LCD Hood. If you do it enough times it will become second nature; I have mine down to about 15 minutes now.

Mine is configured almost exactly like this:

You'll notice just above the 'spindle' there is enough room for you Thumb and Forefinger to control the LEFT/RIGHT swing of the camera.

The amount of RINGS you put on will depend on how centered or off-centered you camera is. Remember, the perfect balance will act like a pendulum; no matter how far you pull the base left/right/forward/back it will swing back smoothly to an upright position without crossing the line of the swing.
