Serpico

This has been on my list of films to see for years, but for some reason or another I had never seen it until this weekend. It is another great testament of the brilliance of Lumet's vision, but at the same time this movie I think is a perfect example of made at the right time. It is the right movie at the right time. I don't think there has been a more daring movie since. I think this film is right up there with 'The Parallax View' because it deals with a subject matter in a manner that today, major studios seem to avoid like the plague (remember how Disney did not want to release Farenheit 9/11).

Pacino's performance is second to none, but this is just another example of a great film, I can't believe it took me so long to finally see this.

I agree. Great film. There are so many more out there. Don't forget Dog Day Afternoon. Brilliance with improvisation.

I vaguely remember watching Serpico: good cop takes on corrupt NYC and grows a beard. My favorite rendition of Serpico was the one directed by Max Fischer.

a lesser known Lumet film that is worth checking out: The Fugitive Kind with Marlon Brando and Anna Magnani. Based on a Tennessee Williams play. Interestingly, Williams wrote a play called The Fugitive Kind, but the Lumet film was based on a play called Orpheus Descending.

You mean like Warren Beatty making a film called Heaven Can Wait, based on the 1943 film Here Comes Mr Jordan, not the 1943 film Heaven Can Wait, which was based on the play The Birthday?

My original point in bringing up Serpico was not to make any mention of politics or anything along those lines, but to point out that movies from this era continued to push the botton of what was at the heart of society. I believe in our ever changing global society of sensitivity trainings that a film like this that deals head on with a subject like police curruption would never get a greenlight, let alone land a cast this talented.

It is a great girlm though, yes the clothes are good, and he does grow a hella beard!
