Seriously lacie?

Ok so both my scratch drive and my backup drive failed within a week (while another drive was in transit to my house to replace my failed drive. I finally got it back and running and I am dumping it onto a borrowed harddrive. What do you guys do for maximum security on backing up files?

Well, I have one drive which is a clone of my main system drive and all my non replaceable work media (sound effects library, motion and soundtrack media) in a fireproof safe. Beyond that, a mirrored raid drive for my replaceable work files (stuff that can be recaptured or exists on another drive) and time machine backups.

I would add some form of tape backup. The drives are expensive but the media is relatively cheap per GB. I would suggest LTO-4. Always store those tapes in boxes with controled humidity .

That's funny you mention this... I've recently had 2 LaCie externals stop working for me in the last month. I got a drobo, copied all of my data to mirrored drives, and then removed them for archiving and took one to my work and left one at home. I might get another 2TB to throw in it for new backups.

Mirroring is the way to go– have you original files, then back them up onto a mirrored set up. This means you should have 3 copies of the data, so if two go down you're safe.
