I've been playing with this some tonight and I must say I am VERY impressed! And it takes a lot to impress me. This is a great piece of software, everything I've ever wanted and can imagine in terms of live monitoring via computer. It evens start/stops recording when the button is pressed on the DVX. Ths scopes, alarms, timecode clock, and clip management are all very, very nice. I guess it's $395 w/ DVX discount. That's $395 I really don't need to spend, although I really, really want to. The clip management stuff alone is worth it, but I'm afraid it's going to have to go to the back of the line and wait it's turn until I can afford it.

yes it is a little pricey.. but they have dropped it quite abit from the original $800 price tag, that it may go up to after the end of the month. I imagine they are gonna sell truckloads of theses. It also comes with little focus charts etc. on a laynard btw.

You can do at least some of this (vector scopes, etc) with FCP on a PowerBook.

I like it, but it's not the sharpest image. I'd almost rather buy a 8-inch widescreen monitor that can sit on the tripod to show the anamorphic, than fork out $400 bills. beside's if you have an editing program on your laptop you can open the capture and run the feed in through there.

Thats true Nick, but then agian does that monitor come with a vector scope, a waveform monitor, audio spectrum analyzer, and many more???

I think the best would be to use this in conjunction with a field monitor. I havent tried this yet but Im going send this from my Laptop to my monitor and see what kind of quality I get.

Don't forget on the Mac you can set Universal Access to zoom in the entire screen. Great for setting critical focus.

Can this software replace (in terms of picture quality and sharpness) a 9 inch pro field monitor when running on a modern laptop?

In a word--no.  DV Rack can be used for recording, framing, focusing, QA, and for the scopes and meters, but the image is not going to be the equivalent of a professional monitor for making color and gamma decisions--an inherent difficulty with most lcd monitors.  Most laptops have mediocre screens, so regardless of the software, you're not going to get an accurate picture.  If it's a decision between buying a professional monitor or DV Rack--there's no question--buy a real monitor.

if you press Alt+esc in Serious magic, you get the full screen. You also can put on that overlay safe zone marks and framing guides.

Your right about the monitor though, its not gonna match a CRT. However, if you use the program on a desktop, or even better use the Video output on your laptop to a 14" CRT computer monitor on location (power permitting of course) it gets very very close. I compared the two this weekend and the gamma etc. Is very similar, only difference being is that the Computer has much higher resolution.

this software looks great but could someone PLEASE post a link or a source for a step by step tutorial on how to read all of the info??

especiall the spectrascope stuff that premiere already has in it??
