serial vs firewire

are firewire, serial, and red/white/yellow cables equivalent in terms of quality of tape capture? firewire on my computer seems not to detect the camera, so i'm thinking of trying other options if they're viable.

Re: serial vs firewire

Firewire is by far the best -- it transfers the original recording in its original state, still in component video, without recompression.

S-Video is in second place, and it's a distant second.

Red/white/yellow is composite video, and it's the worst quality way you can go.

Re: serial vs firewire

This quetion was come up many times.
Transfer rate is higher on USB2 then on Firewire, but (big BUT)
Transfer protocol on firewire is better for transfering large size files, then on USB 2, most of video files is large size.
USB however has faster connection speed and transfer faster smaller size files, like photos.
USB 1 - 12Mbps
USB 2 - 480Mbps
Firewire - 400Mbps
Firewire2 - 800Mbps
It's look like USB faster then Firewire, in fact it cut data in smaller chunks, and in big file sizes it preform slower.
