serial # problems

I have been trying to install FCP to my macbook pro and when the prompt for a serial # comes up, I enter the upgrade serial #, then a prompt for the original serial # comes up. When I enter the original serial # there is an error message saying that the serial # is in-valid. Why is this? I know I typed it correctly. Any thoughts? I have already had to postpone my deadline for this new project. Please help.
 
Don't know if this is your problem but just so you know if this is the case. You can't upgrade the academic version.
 
So, I had the academic version, needed to upgrade. In order to upgrade I had to buy a whole new fcp studio 2 with a upgrade. I bought it from a legit internet source. It worked fine on my old computer, but now I am having problems on my new macbook pro.
