Sequence and Capture Settings

Whats the difference between DV NTSC 23.98 and DV NTSC-24? I know you have to remove the pulldown on one of those. So far I have been just using DV NTSC 48KHz. I have a project shot in 24p (F5 setting) so should I set my sequence to DV NTSC -24 since I did not shoot in the advanced mode?

Also does it show your camera listed under the settings? I am seeing Sony's DCR-TRV900 and under the DV50 setting I am seeing a JVC Betacam model listed. Am I supposed to see the DVX100 listed. I haven't noticed this until now.

Re: Sequence and Capture Settings

If you shot in 24p (F5 setting) then you should be using a normal DV sequence. (29.97) You don't want to apply the advanced pulldown to video shot on the F5 setting because it won't remove the correct frames.

As far as your camera not showing up. I'm not at my work computer right now to see if it normally says the DVX100 or not.

Re: Sequence and Capture Settings

ok cool but let's say I do shoot something in advance mode in the future...which do I select NTSC DV 23.98 or NTSC DV-24. I know that the 23.98 means I have to remove the pulldown but I am unclear what the DV-24 option is.

Re: Sequence and Capture Settings

For 24p advanced. Capture at 29.97 with pulldown removed(which means clicking the box on the left bottom of page).
Sequence set at 23.98. Any other sequence setting makes you render any clip you put on the timeline.

Re: Sequence and Capture Settings

What is the best setting to shoot in for a music video that need s to look like film? F5 or F6?

If I use FCP, Shoot in F5 what timeline do I use?
If I use FCP, Shoot in F6 what timeline do I use?

Thanks, Dave

Re: Sequence and Capture Settings

ok, here's the settings you should use for each case.

F5: Capture as normal, edit in a 29.97 timeline.

F6:Capture as normal, edit in a 23.97 timeline, with pulldown removed. The remove pulldown setting may need to be checked in the sequence settings window.

Have fun editing!!!

Oh, if you will be adjusting speed in the music video then you may want to shoot in F6 mode. Check out my comments in one of the other posts on this site regarding speed adjustments when in F5 mode. Here's the link. http://www.dvxuser.com/cgi-bin/DVX2/YaBB.pl?board=FCP;action=display;num=1084390408

Re: Sequence and Capture Settings

When shooting 24pA, you should be using the capture preset of

DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal

You don't have to render anything this way.

Your sequence setting should be for DV NTSC 48kHz - 23.98

Re: Sequence and Capture Settings

jaredalv - is exactly on the ball. Do not do it any other way if you are shooting in F6 or 24pa you need to use the DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal and edit in a 23.98 based timeline. You will not have interlacing problems this way. If you are trying to get that absolute film 16mm look. 24pa is the way to go. David for your music video use 24pa, it is the better solution, only if you are editting in FCP HD or 4. I have had bad experiences editing 24pa footage in other programs and FCP 3.

Re: Sequence and Capture Settings

Thanks for the replies.
I will do what you guys said. I did some samples in FCP 4.5 and I did notice that I still see a little bit of a strobe effect on my ntsc monitor. Is that normal? Cause all the stuff that people post to look at on the web (that was shot in 24pa) looks just like film.

Re: Sequence and Capture Settings

On my NTSC moniter I never have the strobe effect. Here are some directions I posted in another part of the forum for someone who had problems with interlacing.

******************************************
I almost always use 24pa to capture most of what I film.  In order to edit with 24pa you NEED to import using the

DV NTSC 48kHz Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal       Preset
(do not worry about the framerate of this pulldown removal, it doesn't matter, it is a preset, just use it)

If you do not, your footage will be interlaced to hell.  Then after you digitize all of your footage using this preset you need your sequence settings to reflect the Pulldown removal by editing in a 23.98 fps timeline.

24pa is really meant to be used if you want to edit as you would a 16mm or 35mm film and to output back to those formats.  This is the ONLY way to rid your problems with the interlaced lines.  YOU CANNOT DO THIS ANY OTHER WAY, WITHOUT PROBLEMS!

Re: Sequence and Capture Settings

I don't know if your monitor is having issues possibly with interlacing??? ???
