SEQUELS WE WANT TO SEE

J.R. Hudson

Spirit Animal
Sequels for the most part usually just don't cut it. Not an exact science but always motivated by the machine to garner more profit from the original.

Some sequels HIT thier mark solid with films like The Empire Srikes Back, Spiderman 2, Aliens, The Road Warrior, The
Godfather Part 2 while others fail miserably like Back to the Future, Rambo, Escape From L.A. and Another 48 Hours.

List the film you WANT to see a sequel too (Not a remake; a sequel and yes, even a prequel) and give your .02 cents on the general plotline or idea.

I start with John Carpenters THE THING. My story takes place weeks after the first film ended when a SAR Team comes to search for the Outpost 31 group.

In my story, Kurt Russel does not return but is dead (frozen, along with David Keiths character). They pack up the dead and helo-lift them to the coast where the bodies are put onto a cargo ship for transport back to New York (The States).

I had always thought of hell breaking loose on the ship but came to the conclusion that is too typical and more a re-hash on a boat. My version has the bodies brought back and then hell breaks loose on the mainland.

Yeah. EVeryone is getting infected and The Thing is everywhere.

Re: SEQUELS WE WANT TO SEE

Less Than Zero 2

90 minutes of a revived Robert Downey Jr running over Andrew McCarthy and Jamie Gertz's whiny asses.

Re: SEQUELS WE WANT TO SEE

I have to put some thought into this, but in the mean time - John, I think you just gave up a million dollar idea. That would be a freakin kick ass movie. Having them find Russell and Keith frozen and that upon the autopsy the "Thing" is revived and continues on its path... great!

The boat idea probably would work well, though yes it's been done a thousand times(as has everything else), I say save part 3 for the mainland infection or have part two end on it reaching a carrier on the mainland.

Anyways, just wanted to let you know I think that is a killer idea and I'd love to see it.

Re: SEQUELS WE WANT TO SEE

LOL

I knew Stabb would appreciate it.

This is an idea I have had since about 85 :P

Maybe I should write the damn thing and present it to Universal? I am huge fan of 'apacolyptic proportions'.

Maybe hell does break loose on the ship and then of course makes it's way into the mainland? My goal is to have it become widespread as predicted in the original:

PROBABILITY THAT ONE OR MORE TEAM MEMBERS MAY BE INFECTED BY INTRUDER ORGANISM

75%

PROJECTION IF INTRUDER ORGANISM REACHES CIVILIZED AREA:

ENTIRE WORLD POPULATION INFECTED 27,000 HOURS FROM FIRST CONTACT.

YEah baby! :D

Re: SEQUELS WE WANT TO SEE

So who wins??? Off the top of my head all I could forsee is us nuking the entire planet to destroy it, thus essentially destroying the earth.(which isn't cool in real life, but cool in the movie world)

That could turn part 3 into a Mad Max world where the remaining earth survivors must battle an evolved strain of the "Thing"!

One thing I'm thinking about is how all the spfx were practical in the Thing. I know CGI can do amazing things these days, but for such a huge epidemic that you propose to take place, is it possible to to keep the spfx integrity of the first film and keep your idea from becoming a CGI whorehouse?(that's my deep thought)

Oh yeah, I say write your story, if not just for good practise. You've been actively writing for a while now(from what I understand), so what were to happen if you all of a sudden got somewhere in the industry, you became someone... you get asked what other projects you've been working on and presto you tell them about this idea you've had since 1985... and hand them the script.

Re: SEQUELS WE WANT TO SEE

You talked me into it. I will activate this in MM2000

I like where you are going with the MAD MAX scenario. I like the idea of the world going to hell and am not always satisfied with a fluffy ending.

I also agree that these effects would have to be practical. CGI liquid isn't cutting it just yet (at least organic tissues and organs). Perhaps some CG to 'enhance' the effect but stay true to the original gore.

I was thinking when they discover the bodies of Russell and David that one of them should be all 'thing'd out'.

Re: SEQUELS WE WANT TO SEE

Not sure what MM2000 means John, but yeah start writing it!

As for some ideas for other sequels:

I use to have this idea for a prequel to Pulp Fiction, which was all about Vincent Vegas' time in Amsterdam. How he ends up working for a crime boss in Amsterdam who is threatened by a new crime outfit. It would be a sort of Tarantino meets Guy Ritchie film, but would definitely have the Reservoir Dogs Crime tone to it.

Blade Runner 2. Same future(the world Scott and team created was amazing, and I'd keep that), but I'd make the movie into a way more action less inner struggle film. As history tends to repeat itself I'd retread the first film, or go with what I thought I,Robot was gonna be about and have a cop tracking a serial killer Robot.

Punisher 2. Keep Thomas Jane, have Dolph make a cameo(though he retired from acting), give the movie a budget and John McTiernan!!!(side note... anyone watch the extras for Punisher - the Director - Hensleigh, nice guy... after watching all the making's of and the behind the scenes I've come to the conclusion he wore the exact same outfit for the entire shoot. I'm talking same white shirt and blue jeans for 40 days in a row. Not trying to hijack this thread at all, but if anyone has ever watched it I want to know if you think the same thing).

I'd also like to see a sequel to Shanghi Noon where they go to England and all the jokes center around rain and people having bad teeth, and have the movie really suck bad!

Re: SEQUELS WE WANT TO SEE

Whoa.
Back to the Future 2 & 3 failed?
While I agree that the original stands on its own as a genuine classic, I think the other two are great fun in the spirit of their predecessor.
Part 2 is a blast to follow along with the first time you see it and Part 3 is good Old West hijinks!

I love those films.

That said, I'd love to see a sequel to Big Trouble in Little China.
I don't care what it's about as long as Jack Burton and gang are back in action.

Re: SEQUELS WE WANT TO SEE

diggin the thing sequel...that would be sweet...but have them go to the mainland in the second...none of that boat shite, and non of that having to wait for the 3rd to see it get to land.....let the second one finish it.

please...no blade runner 2....i dont think it could work.

the girl with green eyes...man she was a hottie...

Re: SEQUELS WE WANT TO SEE

Id like to see a "Passion of the Christ" Sequel done by Terry Gilliam. ;D

Re: SEQUELS WE WANT TO SEE

Yeah, what was it called again? .... Manne-can't? haha!! Just kidding, never saw it. But the wordplay got the better of me.

Ok, I know this is premature, but I would love to see a sequel to Serenity...even though Serenity wont be released until nearly a year from now. ;D

Re: SEQUELS WE WANT TO SEE

John...I agree with you 100%. I don't know if I would rather see a remake of The Thing or a sequel. It's one of my all time favorites.

The Longest Yard was remade and is coming out this May.

Re: SEQUELS WE WANT TO SEE

I'd like to see a sequel to The Breakfast Club. What happens on Monday when they all go back to school?

A sequel or prequel to The Hidden would be cool too.
