I was wondering how many films sequel or prequel that wasn't done by the soul studio etc.... Let say for example you like Stephen King movie 'Misery' with Kathy Bates and decided to write a sequel 'Misery II' continuing the story.

What films have indie filmmaker step forward and made without the studio nod. I'm sure there has been a few? What issues do you think you would have to go around to be able to do this? There are a lot of remakes, prequel and sequels and I'm sure some of them were without the studio permission?

Anyway I was just thinking outside the box when a friend of mine said hey remember that great film that came out in the 90's we should make a sequel/prequel to it........

Oz the Great and Powerful. Though that wasn't an indy.

They could make it because the Baum stories are public domain, though. Anything by Stephen King isn't.

Most films are copyrighted, most scripts are copyrighted, some film characters are trade marked, so, in most cases, there is no possibility for an 'independent' film maker to rework in any way 'sequel/prequel/reboot' of most films.

John August who wrote the script for "Big Fish"(2003), had to 'buy back' rights to his script, and negotiate adaptation rights to the original book, to make his musical adaptation which is now playing on Broadway, as one example of such a process.

As mentioned anything in the Public Domain can be reworked... however, even Disney did not depict certain "Oz the Great and Powerful"(2013) characters in certain ways to avoid being sued by Warner Bros on the look and feel of "The Wizard of Oz"(1939) characters.
