I dont think my budget will allow for the Sennheiser 416. Any suggestions for the next best? I will be using a boom with the mic on set. I could afford around $700 for the mic....

thanks

Audio Technica 4073A

Audio Technica 4073A

try the Audio Technica 4073A Around $500.
Sounds good and is fairly rugged.

The 4073a was also on my list. I liked what I heard on the test recording. i was also looking at the Sennheiser ME66 K6...The test I heard sounded great and that sells for $479

what do you think?

also...is the quality of the Boom a factor in recording good sound?

awesome...so it looks like the 4073a might be a contender. Its definately the right price and like i mentioned, the test audio I listened to sounded real good.

Look for used 416's - I picked up mine for $450. Used equipment is always a good option as long as you feel comfortable that the source is a good one.

If you just can't find a used 416 at a good price, here's a possible alternative.
For years I have been using a Sony C-74 short shotgun for outside and occasional inside sound. The longer version is the C-76. These were workhorse mics for television news for about a 20 year period. Original list was $1100 or so. They turn up on Ebay often, typically for $75-200. You can even find new ones in leftover Pro dealer's stock (see link below). They have
two low cut positions and an optional pistol grip. It's just my opinion, but
I believe them to be quite similar to the 416 in quality.

If you can wait a couple of weeks, I think it's better to give a call to Trew audio, Gotham, Coffey, Pro-sound, LSC, and let them know you are looking for a good used 416. Those microphones go in and out of Audio dealers very often.
I rather go with the 416 than the 4073.

How much do they usually go for?

What kind of quality control is there?

Any warranty?

Thanks.

Their price depends of the mic's condition, these are very respected Audio dealers and they will give you good support. You can be lucky enough to buy one that looks very ugly but it's just cosmetic and it works perfect. That should be cheap and it's going to last for a long time. Talk to them.

Maybe just get the AT 4073A now, save up for a good mixer with limiters if you don't already have one. I think the 4073A with a good mixer is better than just the MKH-416 direct. Not to metion, the 4073A is going to be more forgiving with it's wider pickup pattern.

Actually heck with that logic, may as well get a RODE NTG-2 and a mixer now :)
Quote from Audio Media Article

Sound Mixer John Arkley of UK TV show The Bill agreed
to try out the Rode NTG-1 and said “There’s very little
difference in sound between this and a Sennheiser 416.
This would make a great back-up mic.” He also commented
that the Rode was more susceptible to handling noise than
the 416. That is a pretty favourable review, however, for a
mic that costs under £150.

I still have a spare 416 for sale, but that freaking dollar/euro ratio makes it a great price in the EU, but only a good price in the US...

Anyway, if you can, get a 416, you´ll still use it when we all do 4K video on a daily basis :2vrolijk_08:!
