Sennheiser MKH-70

Has anyone had any experience with the MKH-70? I've found a good rental deal for it, and was wondering if it was much better than the 416. Thanks.

A great mic (replacement for 816). Not something that to be used where a 416 is called for. It is a long shotgun with a VERY tight pattern, for use in outdoor noisy environments and/or where you can't get as close to your subject. For a novice, the tight pattern makes it the most difficult mic to boom well.

I would only recommend getting this mic if you know specifically you will need it or to fill out a sound kit.

Good luck

That mic f*****g rocks. But, as wabbit said, it's not a something you used where a 416 is needed. You'll want a boom op with good experience to use this mic.

Thanks, guys. Yeah I'll probably stick with the 416. I heard that the 416 can at times seem a bit tinny. I was wondering if the MKH 70 reduces some of this tinniness. Maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.

Tinny? no. Some feel the MKH mics are a little harsh or brittle. They tend to prefer the "warmer" sound of Nuemanns. I have used both and prefer the MKH sound.

The Sennheiser ME66 OTOH is quite tinny and hallow sounding (of course all the sub $500 mics are pretty weak also).

Take a listen to the samples at the top of the audio forum. The MKH70 pretty much sounds just like the 60 but with a narrower axis.
