Sennheiser MKH 50 through Sony Camcorder

I am making a short documentary and am using a Sony WXP X70 Camcorder. I am new to sound.
Luckily, a friend has let me borrow a MKH 50 for the internal audio recordings. The audio XLR input controls on the camera give me the option to use a low cut filter.

When played back, the mic gives a very bassy sound. With the low cut on, it takes away the heavy bass but sounds slightly tinny. Interestingly, when I put the low cut off but switch the roll off filter on the actual mic to ON, I hear the sound I like, bassy but not too bassy.

I would appreciate it if anyone can give feedback on the usual correct way to use this Low Cut filter when recording dialogue as maybe there is an option of recording one type of sound on set and altering it in post production?:undecided

Better to use the low cut (high pass) filter on the mic as it will be more suited to speech as the one on the camera may be set more severe and for removing wind noise.

If using the bass rolloff on the microphone, but not the one on the camera, sounds best to you, then that is exactly the combination you should be using.

Richard,

Being new to sound, here are a few questions for you.

How are you deciding that the audio is flawed? Do you have enough sound gear to make good decisions?

The Mk50 is considered fairly high end, so if the mic isn't flawed, look into issues with the rest of your recording chain. Smaller handycams can have pretty mixed audio sections. You might do a test recording with another recorder.

Since you are new to sound, have you studied good technique for recording audio; mic placement, acoustic issues, recording levels, etc.
