Hello everybody,

I am thinking about getting an used mkh-416 P48, due to the fact that it has been around for a long time it is possible to find some old-one and some new-one. There are any differences in the sound between them? I am not referring as old in the sense of more used.
I hope you understand my question,

thanks.

There might be difference in sound , usually mics need to go every few years for clean up the capsule and some tuning . Mostly depends how the mic was used and by who .

Hi,
thanks for the answer, but apart for this problems that are common to all microphones, I wanted to ask if the mkh-416P is changed in component and design during the years of production.

The question should always be: would anyone pass a 'blind' experiment? And the answer is clearly 'no'. I don't even care about anything else. If I can't hear the difference, there is no difference...

for this reasons I was speaking in the post title of "sonic differences", what matters is the sound! thanks for the answers
Another question: When Have the Mkh-416 been released for the first time? I tried to find the answer on google but without luck.

Hey, I wasn't trying to correct you or anything. Sorry, if it came across that way. Can't answer your next question, though... Cheers! :)

probably before you

I do find different .... That's only me, The old 416 feels more solid than the new one, for some reason I felt the new one is lighter, and the XLR butt part, I think they remove one mental ring , because a friend of mine s 416 came loose now .... but anyways I just ordered mine yesterday .... Sound should be the same.

not really

Actually, the 416 has changed a lot internally over the years.

It was introduced in about 1975, had discrete components and was crystal controlled.

The latest version is RoHS compliant (ie: lead free among other things), has surface-mount components and uses PLL lock instead of a crystal.

Does it sound any different - no,it shouldn't.

The changes were all to keep up with technology as it changes and specific components that are not manufactured anymore.

Later versions - without a crystal - are more rugged and more stable as they don't have a crystal that can drift or get damaged if knocked.

I hope this helps.
