Sennheiser MKE400

For a tiny shotgun it's surprisingly good it's a Sennheiser .. but like all mics for speech you have to get it within one foot of the speechers mouth. Cheers.

Agreed with Raster. I've gotten surprisingly good results from the MKE400, even mounted directly on the camera hot-shoe. But closer = better.

How do you think it compares to the AT 875r and the Rode Video Mic? All in the same price range I think.

I can't really compare the three, as I've only used the MKE400. I will say that I've heard very good things about the sound quality of the Rode, but not much of anything (good or bad) about the AT.

I've got the Rode and evaluated the 400 for them and they're both very similar. The Senns biggest attributes are its small size which might be of value on some projects and its sliding vol control on the side makes for quick accurate adjustments.

Its downsides are the 2 isolation mounts which can't be replaced if they get broken by say jamming it in a camera bag and it's currently about $US50 more than the Rode. The AT875r is also about $US50 extra but it needs phantom power no battery available.

For holidays the 400 for more serious projects say on a boom .. the Videomic.
Cheers.
