Sennheiser Mic ME66

I was wondering if anyone recommends the Sennheiser ME66 to go along with the DVX. I heard it's great professional mike used in broadcast and even films but I would like to hear your opinions, or maybe some other mic would be better for the same price. I'm planning to use it on a boom pole but has anyone tried it as on camera mic?

Thanx

Some audio experts might advise otherwise - mounting it on the boom gives better audio. As i once read somewhere, the dvx mic 1 foot away from the subject will give better audio than the world's bestest mic placed 20 feet away. I've read somewhere here that the me-66 is a pretty kickass mic, and also that the oktava mk012 with hypercardioid capsule is just about the best value for money mic you can get... I'm just laying the groundwork for someone more well versed in audio who can pick up the tab if they come around to view this. Maybe you should post in the audio section, or pm 'The Yankee'

Thanx Malcolm. Just one more thing. Do you know why this mic needs K6 power unit and can't supply directly from the camera? The K6 cost as much as the mic.

The K6 is part of the mic. This is a modular system, the same as the Oktava mk012, that allows several different capsules to be used with the K6. There are short shotgun (ME66), long shotgun and omni capsules available, among others I believe. The K6 can be powered from the camera or with batteries.

Thanx, Kwoff. Did you have any good expirience with ME66? And did you think it will be good even as a on camera mic?

Well cash, you should check out the audio forum for yourself - a quick search would bring up tonnes of information. I can say i've used a few good mics as on camera mics on other cameras, and they were generally much better than the one on the dvx. I doubt you could go wrong with the me-66 though, but like i said, i strongly recommend a post or search in the audio section below where the pros will be able to give you a nice rundown

There was a shoot-out somewhere (can't remember URL), where they tested several mics, and the very cheap RODE NTG-1 held up very well against the big boys. You might want to consider that one. :) I have it myself, and I just love it.

Malcolm, I am thinking of getting peripherals like the seinheisser from Singapore soon (I am from Brunei) can you suggest where I can go to pick them up? Thanks

I was on a shoot this weekend where we used both the ME-66/K6, and the RODE NTG-2 (same as NTG1, but with battery power). To my ears, the NTG-2 had a much fuller sound, and seemed to get a better frequency response than the ME-66. It's also cheaper...

I will try to look for it. Thanx PDX.

i using me66 with 6k for wedding and event shoot in Singapore.
Honestly its a great mic, just that for some,
they find it a bit too sharp.

i have the me66...great mike....use a number of them at the broadcast station i work for.

have one for myself, mounted directly on my dvx with the mike holder. sounds great. very clean.

uses phantom pwr from the camera...the mike pwr unit is needed though...it's part of the mike (on/off, etc.)

Definitely search the audio section, most everyone there prefers anything but the 66.

three words:

Ok ta va.

I bet you'll be hard pressed to find anyone in the audio forum who stands behind the ME66 over similar priced mics. The Oktava with a BBG and shockmount could be had for about the same price as the 66, and its much more versitile. If you are looking for a longer shotgun, the AT4073a will kick the s**t out of the Sennheiser.

I use my two ME66 for many years now and I'm really happy with it. und I don't want any others. On a big Brodcast Cam it' ok but on a small Cam it's a little to big. You better use it on a boom and than it's perfect.

Just my 2 cents...

Differences between SENNHEISER and OKTAVA :

Lifetime.

I own 2 mk012 since july 2005, and 3 K6 2me64 and 1 me66 since well more than 4 years now.

both of them have been treated nicely :
My two oktavas are completly dead, and the k6s still working perfectly.

Okatava have good sound though, but i won't recommend it. if i had to buy oktava each time they died, i would have spend more than the 3 sennheisers.

By the way, ME66 needs a very good boom operator if you want The sound. If you have one.

I think you need to go take a look at dvcreators.net I plan im buying their Location Sound Package Number 1 which includes the following:

NTG-2
Rode Shockmount
Rode Windscreen
Rode Boom Poll
25ft of XLR Cable

That whole thing is for $470. Thats almost the price of the ME66 alone. Im going with that package, the NTG-2 has great reviews from everyone. You just need to use it properly, its a great mic for the price.
