Sennheiser me-80 question

Hey, I am a newbie at filmmaking and am very budget minded. I have been reading alot of posts here about audio and am considering buying an oktava mk012 for indoors and a rode ntg-2 for outdoors. I have free access to a Sennheiser me-80 shotgun anytime. I would like any opinions on if the me-80 is as good or better than the oktava or rode. If so I would like to save that money for something else. Thanks for the help and opinions. This is a great forum.

I had an ME80 and have Oktavas. THe Oktavas are better mics, quieter fuller sound. That said it's a bit of apples and oranges since the ME80 is a short shotgun and the Oktava isn't. The ME is OK, the NTG is supposed to be pretty good, though I would go with the NTG-1 rather than the 2 (shorter and lighter with the same pickup).

Thanks SK,
I didn't know the ME80 was a short shotgun. What would you say is the allowable acceptable distance from your subject for the ME80 and the Oktava.

What ever works. I know it sounds snide but actually it's the real answer. 416's are sometimes used in ADR sessions where hey are very close to the subject, I use Oktavas for BG recordings where they are very far from the source. The difference has more to do with the pickup pattern than the distance from source. THe ME80 pattern looks sort of like a baseball bat with frizzy hair around the handle, and the Oktava pattern (depending on capsule) is anywhere from a ball to a stretched out heart (point away from you). The frizzy's on the handle are what cause shotguns trouble indoors because they pick up strange bits from the sides, out doors you don't really have reflections on the sides so it's much less of an issue.
