Sennheiser G3 Wireless Lav. Buying New vs Used?

I am about to pull the pin on a Sennheiser system. I really need two wireless lav mics, but will probably start with one. I'm trying to replace gear after a $18,000 theft with no insurance I'm still recovering from and I need a few extra pieces of kit including this mic, so every dollar helps. That being said, I wonder if this is a dangerous place to try and save money. How safe is it to buy one of these rigs used? I have no idea what the durability is like.

The G3 is quite new so second hand ones should be fine unless they have been abused and knocked around.

Try and buy privately if you can rather than from a production company or pro user who may have had then in use every day since their purchase, also look at new deals with rebates on other manufacturers as sony were doing this a few weeks ago.

Also make sure that any second hand system is legal and is the latest spec for frequencies!

At the moment there are few Chinese counterfeits of G3 on the second hand market. Tons of G2, but so far G3 seems less copied. Things to check are loose connectors on top, and that any supplied mic doesn't crackle where the cable is wiggled. Other than that, they're a safe bet.

I just posted a thread where I "tested" a couple of mics... I used two G3 kits as part of the 4 microphones. One kit with the stock G3 omni lav, and one with the DPA 4080 directional lav. Check it out...

Don't need to check is out - quality wise, the DPA will be vastly better than the ME2 - as also the Sennheiser MKE 2 will also be vastly better.

But - I would use the DPA 4060 omni rather than the directional 4080 - directional tie mics are noisier than omnis and have more disadvamtages than advantages over an omni.
