Sennheiser G3 - strange sound

Hi

I just came back from an interview shoot where my Sennheiser sounds a little off. I'll try to explain it without posting any sound files.

It sounds odd because I did not hear any background noise. It was mic'ed very close to the interviewee so his voice was picked up fine. But whenever he wasn't speaking the audio was like pure silence, which isn't right. There should be background ambient noise. It was indoor with air conditioning on and the lav didn't pick it up even though in my experience after doing 50 million of these it should've. When the interviewer speaks in the background, the signal was broken up. You can hear the air-conditioning noise when the interviewer speaks, but of course it is underneath his voice...

It's like the Sennheiser was deciding what was worthy of picking up and what wasn't. Any time the signal is too quiet it simply does not record, which isn't cool. When I got home I tested it along with a regular shotgun mic (to see if it is a problem with my camera FS700), both tracks seem fine.

Has this happened to anyone of you?

thanks

Sounds like the squelch setting on the receiver was set too high. Adjust to medium or low and see if that helps.
