Sennheiser G2 - "SSS" Clipping

Hi everyone,

I've noticed that whenever the lav mic (pre-included with G2), picks up med to high sibilance (SSS sounds), it starts to clip. I tried putting -10 dB on the transmitters end, and that helps a bit. If I turn it down lower to -20 dB, and turn up the gain on my mixer's end, that usually takes care of the problem, but will that affect the quality of information the mic pics up?

Has anybody else experienced this?

Thanks,

Haz

The G2 is available with 2 mics, an omni (me-2), and a cardioid (me-4). For film work the omni is more desired. You have not indicated how you you are attaching the mic. Adjust the sensitivity with the mic attached to the talent, and have the talent deliver their lines at the volume they'll be using when the camera is rolling. WARNING: If the scene is low intensity, the actor will typically speak softer and softer when the camera is rolling then what they will deliver for you. If the scene is high intensity, the actor will typically be louder when the camera rolls than during a rehearsal. With the talent speaking, adjust sensitivity so the meter is deflecting 2/3 up the scale.

If you are getting peaks during sibilance, try mounting the mic upside down on the talent. As a omni, it will stick pick them up find, but moving so it faces downward will eleminate a bit of the harshness of the me-2. Adjust receiver gain to deliver the signal level desired to the equipment it is connected to by using the downstream device's metering.

You set the transmitter end to match the volume of the speaker.

0 or -10 is normal for speech, -20 is for loud speech or singing, -30 is for loud singing.
