Sennheiser G2 gain Staging ?

Hi everyone,
I like everyone else have 2 of the Senn G2's for my DVX. My question is what setting combo do you use ? I have been using Mic. input, about 30% on the knob & -30 on the AF out on the reciver.

Is there a better way to minimize the noise on this DVX / Mic combo ?
Like Line / +10 DB on reciver, 80% on the knob ??

Is there a tech in the house !!? :-)

Is there a preamp on the mic input setting I should avoid ? The transmitter & camera seem to be set way down, Hmmm ...

Another question, I have 2 Sony 77b lavs. Is anyone using the clip on transmitter or the adapter cable to connect to non-Senn lavs ?

Thanks in Advance,

Steve

My sense from reading various posts here is that the dvx preamps are probably less noisy than the Senn's. Thus, I have been using mic input on the dvx and -20 to -10 on the AF output gain of the receiver (with the dvx knob set around 30-40%). My audio is very clean using these settings. I am using the lav that came with the G2, and have not tried other lavs with the transmitter, although I have used an AT 897 short shotgun with the plug on transmitter with good results (although the plug on transmitter RF output level needed to be set to maximum with this configuration (?))

My guess is you are hearing the noise that is just inherent in all analog wireless. It is more pronouced on the G2 then in some high end lectros but even those have a fair amount of noticable noise.

The thing is...I don't think some people hear the noise. They listen to a wireless and seem to think it's fine. Can't figure out if they absolutely physically can't hear it or just don't focus on it to notice. Either way some people seem to hear nothing bad with analog wireless.

Avoid wireless use at all cost and/or upgrade to digital wireless.

BTW, stick with the pre-amp on the DVX.

Didn't follow your second question but if you are looking to use lavs that have different adaptor plugs then your wireless TX, send them to any audio house and they can rewire a new adaptor for your lavs.

Good luck.

The only reason you are hearing the noise is because your input and output levels are not matched properly. On both the transmitter and receiver you have to set the sensitivity correctly. The fact that your input level on the camera is low tells me you are overdriving the output of the mic receiver and hence the noise. BTW my Sennheiser G2 mics are as quite as my $4000 wireless mics. Actually the G2 has a slightly better signal to noise ratio and frequency response than the lectrosonic 200 series which costs 4 times as much.

Without being there let me try to explain. Firs take your transmitter and place the mic ata normal distance. Adjust the sensitivity so that the VU meter shows a good range of reproduction. When you speak loud it does not pin the bar meter but hits the high end on peaks and still resisters some bars on soft talk. Now on the transmitter look at the meter and make sure it looks the same. Now plugged into the camera set the cameras meters at 50%. Adjust the output of the transmitter listening on headphones until the sound is good to the ear and the vu's on the camera react in a good range, not too high and not to low. Its very easy with a system that has the ability at adjusting both transmitter and receiver to have one set correctly and the other not.
