Sennheiser G2 Audio Distortion

I've recently aquired the G2 with the ME2 Lav mic and am having some problems with the audio going into HVX200.

There is a fair amount of distortion in the voices. I've tried lowering the transmitter sensitivity as well as lowering the receiver's AF output level. It's helped some, but the sound is still not as clear as it should be. Can anyone offer some suggestions?

Thanks!

well i dont know if the problem is over modultion or something elce but if it is than the trick is to keep the audio coming into ur camera between -12- -20 db.

stick the headphones in to the g-2 reciever and check if you have distortion on out coming signal
if yes lower the input sencitivity , adjust the camera to line level and set the out put level to the maximum , then adjust the picks on the camera going to -4 dbfs9 keep the alc- off) when your transmitter hit the maximum

G2 systems come from the factory set for line level and ready to cause you problems if you don't know that.

dont you think it would be better if he sticks the headphone into the end device (mixer,camera...).

and how will he know he doesnt get the **** right from the air :-)
by elimination that peas of chain he can go forward

no that is a great tip to put the headphones into the jack on the receiver...

this way you hear the raw signal from the transmitter.

then if that sounds ok you can think about other things like are you using the smae channel, have you tried using another channel to see if interference might be your problem??

has anyone ever used the g2 beltpack transmitter for line level input?

it says mic/line and its tempting to try and use that as you would the plug on transmitter.

i've always found the g2 docs vague at best.

on the older generation there is a volume control that one might think it is the headphone volume level when it really is the volume of what is going into the camera!

didnt use but as i see it its simpe attunuation befor input - no bias out , the lectrosonics work the same - different plug

Another contributing factor to your distortion may be the mics. The lavs that come stock with the G2's are pretty low end (I consider them basically unusable, but others like them, so YMMV). If everything else you try fails, see if you can borrow or rent a different mic for the G2 and see if it sounds better.

Sure, as long as your camera is set for that, but most people who buy those units aren't audio kings and may not realize that.

Well he said he was using the default ME2 lav and then going straight into HVX, (not from mixer) so xlr input would be set to mic.

As I said in earlier post

Xmitter sensitivity -30db
Rcvr AF out -6

That should give him a base to go from with camera audio dials at noon.

the camera audio dials , have nothing with analog distortion - which happens on the analog side , it has only deal with already digitized levels .
why not set the camera input to line , sounds me much better deal .
at least the receiver maximum level cant distort what the line ins on dvx could exept .

the -30 as i remember correct is very low setting for normal voice with me 2

usually there is no common setting , the g-2 is not good enough set the tx to low for its self noise .

i've always set my xlr inputs to line when using either of my sennheiser wireless, both the g2 and the previous generation.

the transmitter is taking in a mic signal but i'm pretty sure it gets received and fed to the camera as line level.

of course you could probably go into the receiver and turn up the signal level but line level seems safer to me.

Who or where I got that other information from is now a real head scratcher.

I figured I should actually put a G2 rcvr into my camera with an ME 2 on xmitter and see for myself. Looking at rcvr I could see right away, yes its a line output device and so set XLR input to Line.
I set Rcvr AF out +12 (Max), Xmitter sensitivity to 0db and levels were fine for a normal voice level with no distortion. In a situation with raised voices I can see turning sensitivity on Xmitter down.
