Sennheiser EW-100 Question

I recently acquired a second-hand Sennheiser EW-100 wireless kit. I've been using the lav transmitter/receiver with great success. I am just now getting around to trying out the SKP100 transmitter, and I am not having any luck getting this to work with any of the microphones I own.

I understand that the SKP100 does not provide phantom power, but I tried the microphone with an older AT Condenser Microphone that I had lying around which takes a AA battery, and nothing happened.

Can anybody clue me in as to what I am doing wrong? And better yet, can you recommend a low-cost vocal microphone that would work with the SKP100 (I bought the EW100 set primarily for the wireless lav, but it may be nice to have an inexpensive handheld option on hand, in case the need arises)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Any dynamic mic should work. For ENG applications, a lot of people use Electro Voice RE50 or Sennheiser MD46.

OK - borrowed a dynamic vocal mic, and it didn't work. Does the mic need to be battery powered, since the SKP100 does not provide phantom power?

Thanks, in advance, for any help you can provide.

i have both the ew-100 g2 and the ew-500

and i have the skp-100 plug on transmitter and i have the skp=? that came with the ew-500 bundle.

for interview type stuff where you actually want to show the mic i use the sennheiser md-46 that was mentioned above.

its a great sounding mic and its pretty affordable.

one nice touch is to get a mic flag (those square or triangle things you see on news people's mic's)

it can give a documentary or an event video a nice profressional touch.

you just buy the mic flag and then print out an appropriate logo/artwork on a sheet of sticky backed white sticker material and walla you have a nice pro looking mic.

i would take the mic that you have that takes the battery for power and plug it into your camera, shut off the phantom power to that input and make sure the input is set for mic and see if the mic works there.

if it doesn't work there then you know that the plug on transmitter/wireless has nothing to do with the problem.

if it does work directly plugged in then you need to go through each step and see what you might have missed...

check the silly stuff like making sure you have both the skp-100 and the receiver set to the same freq.

make sure you have the beltpak lavalier transmitter turned off when using the skp.

also, i believe the screw fitting on the skp has to be nice and firmly connected to whatever mic as i think i read somewhere that the screw on ring is important in giving the skp good range.

Dynamic mics don't need power. Like Matthewd5 suggested, try plugging the mic directly into the camera (via XLR cable) and see if it works. Make sure your audio level is set to "mic" not "line", and play around with the volume knobs a little.
