Sennheiser Ambeo Microphone

Haha why would you do a 3D VR ambisonic audio promo in mono! :D

It turns out the 3D Ambisonic to HRTF (headphones) works pretty well on stereo speakers too:

I was pleasantly surprised when watching this video on the living room stereo how well the 3D spatialization works. Also spatializes pretty well on near-field monitors (tested with Tannoys). Best with headphones...

This was recorded on the Ambeo and Zoom F4. The F4 is OK, for the extra money the Sound Devices MixPre6 is a better deal (sounds more detailed/less digital and has excellent analog limiters). I used http://www.ambisonictoolkit.net/ and https://www.reaper.fm/ for post processing. I tried HarpX etc. and couldn't hear any improvement in quality over the free Ambisonic Toolkit (using Sound Devices pre-amp and Stax for critical listening).

For those wishing to experiment with 3D audio and have a low budget, the free Ambisonic ToolKit + Reaper includes tools for placing mono and stereo sound sources in 3D, which can then be mixed down to HRTF or multi-channel as with 4-channel ambisonic sources. The quality is very impressive!

I first heard really good 3D audio listening to Scott Foster's Convolvotron at NASA Ames Research Center. The Convolvotron was insane (for the time) custom hardware performing real-time HRTFs with playback on Stax and a Polhemus magnetic head tracker. It's amazing how far things have progressed in term of cost and size reduction (latest head trackers are vastly better than the Polhemus). However I'd love to compare the now ancient Convolvotron to current systems as it was truly extraordinary- not sure we've passed up that level of real-time 3D audio quality.
