Sennheiser 416 vs Rode NTG 3

I started a production with the RODE NTG 3 and then tried a SENNHEISER 416. I noticed the 416 has less distortion on loud scenes, is more directional and gives a stronger "S" on dialogue. I'm thinking of replacing my RODE NTG 3 with the 416. The price difference is bit as the 416 is more than twice as expensive. Is it worth it? I would love some feedback.

If you prefer the 416 to the ntg-3 then just get one. you can find cheap used 416's if you look hard enough. I just recently got one for $399 but its t-powered.
I have heard good things about the ntg-3 though and wouldn't mind trying one out.
there have been hundreds of films over the past 40 or so years that have recorded perfectly good sound with the 415/6. It's a proven and pretty much indestructable work horse of a mic.

LOVE my t-powered 416.....BUT, am really thinking about trying an NTG3, as everything I've heard about them is good.

Plus... can you ever have TOO many mics? I think not!

I own both of them and I can tell you that the 416 comes out of the bag more often than the NTG-3. Why? I'm not sure, but the 416 has something that I like better than NTG-3, probably is the narrower pattern and the ugly off axis effect. Actually, sometimes is great to have such an obvious off axis sound. Probably is just that I'm more used to the sound of the 416.
An slightly used 416/ 48v cost the same than the Rode NTG-3. I would go for the 416.

Rafa, I noticed the 416 has less distortion when the recording volume is high. Have you noticed the same thing?

I haven't use it at very high levels of input but two issues that I did noticed the NTG 3 has more handle issues than the 416, so far I have not problems with a 416 ever. The NTg-3 is not as immune to Rf as Rode claims it is. You can hit by a bank of fluorescent if the mic gets too close, that never happens to me with the 416.
As far as I'm concern, the NTG-3 is a good substitution of the 416 if you can't burn extra $300 or don't like to buy used, but is not a 416 killer.

Glad you guys brought this up. I'm actually debating on which one I want. I used the 416(t-powered one) and man I fell in love with it. Just saving up to get my own. Quick question is this mic more geared toward indoor shoots or both indoor/outdoor. I do have an Audio Technica AT815B for outdoor use since its a long shotgun microphone. Let me know.
