Hi, got another purchase dilema, would you pay and extra $300 for the sennheiser? I should mention that the AT4073a is an ex demo, does this significantly reduce the value?

thanks

Dan

Dude, there is an audio thread for posts like this.

I prefer the 416 to the AT4073a, and think it is worth the additional $300. Lots of people have paid the full $500 over the AT4073a for that mic.

300 for 10 years of usage :(
30 per year , 1 pint beer less a month - maybe 1 ticket less on the road ( or worse :engel017: )
-good investment

My coworker at PBS told me that there are several different levels of production. The three that most are familiar with are:

1) Consumer

2) Prosumer

3) Professional

but the one that people most often forget is:

4) Broadcast

Now as technology gets better, the gaps between the lower levels starts to thin, but broadcast is and will always be broadcast. And you know what mic the PBS station where I work at use for field work? the Senn 416. The AT4073 is probably the best deal for the money as it will get you professional quality at prosumer cost, but the 416 is broadcast, plain and simple, and the fact that you can get it at a near prosumer cost makes the choice very easy.

there is no such a thing like broadcast level - everything that's in the air its broadcast
it could come from me-66 or schoeps ,it could come from dv or 35 mm
you can say that companies choosing some equip because it robust , less influenced by weather and have low running cost , but they don't choose it because its broadcast level:-)

and there is no such a thing as professional equip eather - if some one pay you for,it becomes professional .
of course as long as you know the limitations , other wise you already not professional :-)

I'm glad you said that George. Broadcast level is more about methods then specific gear.

Still a no-brainer to get the 416 though.

hey thanks guys for your wisdom, the news is I just bought the used 416 on ebay with roycote softie and pistol grip all for £515, about $800 which is quite cheap for the uk I think. Really looking forward to receiving and using it. Now just got to get the camera, fingers crossed for a dvx100a tomorrow. once I've got the 'broadcast' equipment hopefully with some practice the methods will come.
cheers
Dan
