Sennheiser 280's

Just wondering what you guy's thought of these headphones?

I think I'm going to get them with my new Sony Ex setup.

I will be using them for monitoring the camera audio levels.

They are good, but tight on your ears (I may have a fat head). I would go for Beyerdynamic DT770 or the industry standard Sony 7506

what about AKG 271's ? I was thinking about picking up a pair myself, they just came out with an updated version as well.

Also Senn HD25's?

Don't go with the AKG 271's. I worked on a low budget project where the director was wearing the 271's and I was wearing my 7506's. I was able to hear background noises that the director could not. He was getting really frustrated when I was calling a hold for airplanes he couldn't hear. Finally I swapped with him and he heard what he was missing and bought a pair of 7506's that night. Also, the 271's have a weird feature that they cut in and out by design (I can't remember exactly what this was all about - but often the director thought something was wrong, only to have them cut back in again when an actor started talking.

Sony 7506 Pros:
1) sound good
2) all day comfort (for my head anyway)
3) loud abilities from virtually any source
4) reasonable isolation at the price
5) folds up into a tiny ball
6) industry standard headphone (what you hear is what the next guy will hear)

Sony 7506 cons:

1) could be more durable (I've only seen one pair fail so far, but they all look tattered in a pretty short amount of time... I also don't like the tiny wire exposed at the top of each can... considering that a solder repair is nearly impossible)
2) isolation could be better

Sennheiser 280 Pros:

1) sound good... arguably the sound is great
2) loud abilities from virtually any source
3) excellent isolation at the price
4) my impression is that they are more durable then the Sonys

Sennheiser 280 Cons:
1) uncomfortable on my big head YMMV... while I love the sound I can't wear them for more then a half-hour w/o feeling them on my head even after they're off.
2) they do NOT fold up into a small ball... they fold up into a BIG ball... you will have to consciously create a place for them in your sound or camera bag.

So the moral of the story? If you have a small head and a big camera/sound bag then I'd consider the Sennheiser 280s... if you have a big head and little space then the Sony 7506 is a nice choice. The trump card is whether or not you record in many loud venues... in that case I'd lean heavily towards Sennheiser, but if you mainly do run 'n gun or interviews, then Sony gets the nod.

I use the 271s for laptop editing and checking mixes, don´t have any issues with it not resolving enough detail.
For "on-location" sound i switched to the 7506 because of much praise here for them.
Don´t regret it, they sound nice, are light on the head and fold down nicely.
Wanted to go with the 280s first, if I need more isolation I just take my AKGs...

I agree with most of what Matt said. I use the Senn 280's and I think they're pretty comfortable. But maybe Matt's got a bigger head than me ;-) I like them better than the Sony because they give better isolation.

I should have said that I didn't just try the 280's... I bought them, and at least twice I typed up an ad for the marketplace while they were still only a week or so old, because I got a great deal on them and I figured I'd pass it on rather then return 'em... but because of the isolation I couldn't bring myself to get rid of them.

I've got 3 pairs of 7506's... (was 4) and the 280's now have a place in the "loud venue" kit.

So the breakdown there is exactly as I feel about it. I'm not thrilled with the size or comfort of the 280's, but at the price I am thrilled with the isolation... the across the board the reverse is true with the 7506's...

I keep looking at the high-end Ultrasones and wondering if I can have it all? But for smaller budgets/heads I think the 280's are a fine choice. There's no clear winner at this price-point for me.

I think either the 280s or the 7506s would be a good choice for on location headphones. As has been stated, comfort depends on each person so you'd be best off going to your local dealer and trying on both pairs and listening to them to see which one is the best fit for you. Just make sure that you actually buy the headphones from that dealer after testing them out. The earpads of the Sony 7506 rest on top of the ear while the 280s cup around the ear, which is a big reason why they have more isolation.

Another thing to note is that the Sony's have a hyped high end which makes things sound a bit more present. I actually think this could be a good thing because it makes the sound seem more detailed so you might notice any problems easier.

Good luck with your headphone purchase.
