Have you ever noticed that Vegas is a very intuitive program that can do almost all that other NLE's can do? Have you ever noticed that the manual never tells you more than simply how to set up a program and how to change custom colors, but doesn't explain any of the slick effects and how and when to use them?

I need a good resource that tells me when to use a "Computer to Studio" color corrector, to explain what REC 709 is, what exactly IRE 7.5 and when to use agressive IRE 7.5 effect. I need a resource that tell me exactly HOW to read the Video scopes, what exactly are broadcast standards for audio levels and colors.

This program can do A LOT, but doesn't give you any information on how to use most of it.

Is there a good solid resource that explains a lot of these issues for Vegas, either a training DVD or a book?

"Almost all"?

Most other NLEs need a suite of support programs bundled with them to do everything Vegas can do by itself. :)

Check VASST.com for a lot of free tutorials, and check the books by Douglas Spotted Eagle.

Also, the Help function is in many ways better than the manual.

You're right David. I was speaking a bit tongue-in-cheek because we all know how great Vegas is. It was SO intuitive that I got by for years with never reading the manual. Most of my work has been for corporate, event, or family projects. That is about to change because I am getting more requests to do commercial work, and realize that I need to become more familiar with Broadcast standards for both audio and video, so I have got to increase my knowledge in these areas. A lot of my questions are outside the scope of Vegas alone, so any recommendations on just good general video resource books for broadcast would be great as well, but I am starting with Vegas. Thanks for your reply, I am in the process of choosing a good VASST tutorial now. Keep them coming.

Yup, DSE's book on Vegas 6 is still great, despite now being a bit out of date - alas, I believe there's no Vegas 8 version... :(
