Sen G2 & DVX User: settings please

I am experimenting with the settings on the G2 and DVX and a have a questions for the Gurus here:

What would be the settings on the DVX camera if I will be using just one lav and no onboard sound fomr the camera mic?

Someone else mentioned, in another post, about "the dvx at about 10 o'clock", what does that mean? They were speaking about making adjustmenst on the mixer, cam, receiver, transmitter.

Okay from my brief time using this wireless there are three areas you need to adjust.

First start at the transmitter. You must set the sensitivity so that the levels are strong but the peaks dont overdrive and cause distortion. YOu just adjust the sensitivity until your peaks ie loudest sounds push near the upper limit of the lower set of bars on the transmitter but the peak light does not flash.

Now I just leave the circular recessed dials on the dvx ( below the lcd) at about midpostion ie 12 0'clock. I then adjust the AF output of the receiver so that the bars on the dvx lcd reach about 3 to 4 red marks on peak sounds. Also make sure your input is mic not line input.

I am not sure whether turning up the AF output means that I am turning up gain on the receiver and hence more noise. People have said that the pre amps are very clean on the dvx so I assume turning up the gain on the dvx and turning the levels on the receiver down may give you a cleaner signal? i havent tried this out and would leave this answer to those more qualified then myself. In fact I might test this out later today if I have time.

Set your G2 transmitter to -10db (sens) if the speaker is quiet and -20db if they're loud.

On the receiver you'll have to try -12db or -6db... see which sounds better with the dials (on the side of the DVX) at 12 o'clock... same as translumination says...

The G2 is pretty clean and the DVX is clean... so take your pick as to which you want to use for gain... just make sure that you have room to quickly tweak levels at the cam since you have to go through a menu to change the receiver (and that'll take 30 or so seconds rather then a quick turn at the cam)...

It also depends on how hot of a lav you're using... some lavs hear better then others.

I'm mostly repeating what translumination just said... but adding a couple numbers on the system... his/her advice is good.

I posted a very similar question without seeing this one first. Would you two please consider looking at the post entitled Sensitivity vs. AF out Vs. Fader Vs Gain. It is just a few down on the main audio page. I have the G2 as well that for intensive purposes is being fed through an isolated track recorder and although I will use this advice how would I deal with the adjustable fader and Gain once I reach the hardrive recorder. Feel free to answer here or there. Thanks!

.... Also make sure your input is mic not line input.

Actually if you plug in a G2 receiver into your DVX the input needs to be set to line. not mic. A receiver is not a mic, it needs to be set as a line, you will get very distorted horrible audio if you have the input set to mic. I own two G2 kits, great mics for the money. Try to get the signal as hot as possible out of the mic then adjust your camera, again as hot as possible. My nightmare when dealing with audio in post is when audio is under recorded, many people are scared of digital clipping because it sounds horrible and then are too safe when setting levels.

If you are concerned about clipping and only using one G2 or any mic for that matter, plug it into Input 2 and map both channels to Input 2, set the level on one of the channels as hot as possible without clipping, turn the other channel down a few bars on the camera. That way you have a safety channel if clipping does occur on the first channel.

As far as the G2 settings go, out of the box they sound pretty darn good. I don't mess with too many settings on the mics themselves, if I am recording something loud I do set the sensitivity to -10 or -20db or whatever you need.

Holy mackerel, I 've always put them on as mic in and didnt get distorted sound but then my receiver levels are usually at zero. I'll have to try this and see what difference it makes.

By the way I use an at899 and it is so much better than the me2 that comes with the kit. Getting a decent lav will improve your audio immensely.

That's why I rely on the DVX and G2 Gurus for the right advice! These guys have years upon years of experience with this stuff. By learning from these guys you can improve your chances of cranking out better projects. Thanks fellow DVXers!
