Selling props and used filming items?

Hey,

What's the opinion on selling props and other items that have been used in shoots? For example, I have loads of things from music videos that I've basically got lying around not doing anything, from helmets, to costumes, to puppets! They're not doing anything, I can't see a usage and they're taking up space and perhaps could earn a bit of cash.

Is it ok to sell this stuff? I mean, I own it, it was bought for shoots that I was paid for, but I was paid for the job not for any specific item etc.

I understand your question. If the production bought the item and they requested it back....then no, you should contact them to turn it over to them.

But if you did it like I do, when a production asks for a very specific prop and I have to acquire it I write that into the contract that it is mine at the end of the production, and I just discount my rate a bit. And some of the items I procure, that is how it must work by law. Simulated explosives and such, are not allowed to be just purchased off the shelf, and my agreement with my vendor states I have to take possession of the items at the end of the shoot or I lose my vendor agreement.

Andrew, let's talk. I want to know what you have that would make a good addition to my collection. I will PM you.
