Selling music videos directly from the band's myspace/website

There are "programs" that let people buy their music and all of the profits go directly to the band, whether it is on their website or myspace. Is there a way to do this with music videos? To set it up so fans can buy then download the music video from their myspace and the profits go directly to the band?

Podcasts but you will probaly get more revenue and views with a free link and a donation button. I have found most wont pay to watch whet they are not familiar with but cult followings love to throw something in the ole tip jar.

Music videos are a marketing tool, and can be a great one if used wisely. I suggest not thinking of them as a product to themselves. Just put it on their website with a flash player or the like, and upload a copy to their Myspace page.

Oh no it's going to be up on their page for people to watch freely, i would just like it to be available for download for people who would like it on their ipods, similar to itunes, only the band would get the profit.

Agreed.

If they want it and are paying you to do it, then by all means, do it and pocket the money. Always respect a client's marketing plan (within reason) if you're just a service provider in it.

Actually, i'm paying for the video,
they just said it would be cool to have it up on itunes, but itunes takes a big chunk out of any profits, so they asked me if there was a way to just set it up on their myspace so people can watch the video, but if they'd like to download it they can donate like a dollar.

It was just to help the band out a little financially.

Well if you just want people to be able to donate, just put up a Paypal link (assuming that's not against Myspace's TOS). Don't expect more than maybe 2% to give anything, though.

I don't think you should tell the band it's a stupid idea. So a bunch of know-it-alls on the web told you it's a stupid idea. Guess what: there are no stupid ideas when it comes to raising money! The landscape is changing. The old way of doing things still works, but for fewer and fewer people, so more power to alternative ideas!

If I were you, though, I'd want to be taking a cut of any money coming from this video that you made at a loss!

Hello Dillon,

On your website (i.e., not myspace) you could install a shopping cart like ZenCart. It's free, and can be customized/simplified to your liking. I'm almost certain it has the capability to sell items that are download-able, like ebooks or video files. Most hosting plans these days have one-click installs that include a shopping cart like zen-cart.

Upload the video to wherever (say, Youtube) and link to it on your website. On the same page as the video, have a link that says "Buy This Video". That link takes you to your shopping cart where they can purchase and download the video in any number of formats you choose to upload.

There'd be essentially no costs and no maintenance for you, and it's there if someone really likes the video and wants it. They could buy a video file, or a physical DVD that you burn and mail.

Just my $.02

Regards,
Russell
