Do some online searching for other DVD of the same subject matter. Then look to see what the distribution company is for those DVD's. You don't want to be shopping an Xtreme sports DVD to a "How to Raise you Puppy" type distributor since they won't have the channels, marketing and PR needed for those types of programs.

The best place I've found to self publish a DVD is
www.customflix.com
it is an on demand service similar to cafepress.com where they hold a base price, you set your profit and they send you a check.

Do you even make any money off of CustomFlix/CreateSpace?

Well, just to follow up. I've gone ahead and placed my movie BUTTERFLIES IN THE WIND with www.indieflix.com and www.filmbaby.com
I've heard good reports on both of them. As for CustomFlix/CreateSpace I'm thinking of going with them too. These are all non-exclusive distributors.
Remember the good old days when we used to get $50,000 upfront money from distributors for a low budget movie?
I know, some producers got $5 million upfront.

You will find great value with a self-distribution attempt. It will not be profitable but what you will learn will be of much more value. Still continue to gain distributors but go out do some door knockin' on your own. It's humbling, it's informative and, at least for me, was very motivating.

Well, I agree things have changed, and you're right, there's much to learn from self-distribution -- like what films not to make 
I've sold my movies to video stores, and I did okay a few years ago. I might try it again with this new movie that I have.
It's too bad distributors couldn't work with filmmakers. There are a few filmmakers that have good distributor contacts, but the overwhelming majority don't.
