Sell Me Your 35Adapter/Follow Focus

My partner and I finally have enough cash to get one, and we're wondering what's going to work best for us. We're getting a Canon XH A1, so it'll have to be HD friendly, and if we have to use rails with it, having rails included in some kind of package deal with the adapter would be awesome. We'd also prefer it be static, and we don't really have the patience for making it ourselves. If you have a follow focus that can work with it, even better.

I wouldn't advise a static adapter for HD. It will pick up every bit of grain. You're definately going to need a moving solution, either rotating or vibrating. Three adapters come to mind: the M2 from Redrockmicro, the Brevis and the SG Pro. All have rod mounting options, if I am not mistaken. And the M2 has a FF available too.

I think for a static solution, you have a few choices, split into two categories:

Twocik's design, my Go35SD, and others -- incorporate hand or machine ground glass. The pro's: they're innexpensive; light loss is pretty good; detail is pretty high; very simple and lightweight. The cons: image doesn't have the same warmth of other more expensive adapters; bokeh and diffusion fair; grain for your cam especially may be a persistent nag (depends on what look you're comfortable with).

The other category is where I think I currently stand alone. I make a proprietary designed static adapter that is great for SD, and fairs fine with some HDV cams as well. The pros: static; great bokeh; same "warmth" as other moving adapters; lightweight, simple and rugged construction. The cons: light needs to be sufficient for the grain to become almost invisible -- this means on interiors with no incoming daylight, a minimum of 250w, but probably more realistically 500+ for a "typical" scene. Exterior shots on decently sunny days are best. Night and "lowlight" shots need the same kind of massaging as they would if you're shooting film.

In any case, there are rails and FF gear out there. I personally don't produce either.

Good luck with whatever you choose :)

Hi,

I agree that static is not a good option for HD.

The SGpro comes with rails and the SGfollow focus will be released shortly.

Do any of you know what the Cinemek G35 costs? My options are still wide open, but I can't compare if I don't know the prices of everything.

It doesn't (yet) exist as a product available for purchase. It was supposed to be 1299.00 at release.

i cant believe the G35 hype is still alive.

Me neither. I believe that even if Cinemek ever releases the G35 they've already lost too much momentum in the 35mm-adapter market. They would have to come out with an incredibly sharp and very reasonably priced unit for people to trust doing business with them. Looking at the past they're not likely to ever put a product out. In my opinion they should've taken the obvious first-movers-advantage, but they totally blew it for me when they kept postponing the release month after month. I'm buying an M2 instead.

That looks great, Dan.

However it looks like we're leaning towards the M2 at this point, though I'm curious as to whether you all think Red Rock's Micro Follow Focus is worth the extra cash, or if we'd be set with an IndiFocus with the gear attachments?

And while we're on the subject, should we get an adapter with mount for Canon or Nikon lenses? I'm not sure how much of a difference there is, though to you pros I'd bet it's massive. I know that initially, we just need one 50mm lens to get us the standard shallow DOF shots. Everything else will be done with the camera's stock lens on a Steadicam Merlin, so the 35 adapter/FF would be moot.

So any kind of recommendation on which lens to get would be nice. And how much should we expect to pay for said lens?

I went with the SGpro (sg35). Neer lookd back, made more than enough moneywith it to pay for all the equiptment i ve bough over the last 2 years....

Just wait till i get the new SGpro Achromat.... Awwwwwww DAmn! it will be sick.

will post grabs as soo nas i get it from Wayne.

Dan, what camera is that?

Timur, how's the SGpro working out for you? I really want to invest in one but just not sure what to get.

That adapter thing is beautiful. Watch Bloody Mary to see it in action.

When you get one make sure you get the SGPro-REV2... ITS HD ready and is SICK. It has one of the best achromats you can get. Custom built. ask wayne for screen grabs from a z1 in Pal land. Its resolution loss less. more liek an M2 in res, but better color and warmth. Looks great.

100% true. You can't imagine how good it is if you don't see...
