Selection tool skipping frames?

This is the toughest thing for me to figure out in vegas. It seems like different clips from different sources line up differently in vegas.

What I mean is, it seems the selection tool (the line running vertically on the timeline that shows where you are in the edit line) skips frames on some clips. As in, I can't go to the beginning of a clip--only a frame prior to the beginning or a frame right after.

Is it something I might have changed in the settings? Any suggestions? I am so confused.

I think I've experienced the same thing. If what I'm thinking is the same thing you've seen, I believe it has something to do with editing interlaced footage. Even though Vegas (or any other NLE, for that matter) may tell you you're on frame X, the NLE has to guess/interpolate where a frame may be between two interlaced fields (such is the case with 50i/60i). For some reason, it doesn't always guess the same image in the same spot. I usually get this if I split a clip between two scenes.

The workaround I've used is to trim the edges of each clip by a frame or two, to make sure you're fully into the scene you want.

Let me know if this is what you're talking about and if this helps any.

It's definitely along those lines. Trimming clips is what I've been doing, but it's annoying. I was hoping there was something in the settings...like to make the spacing smaller or something. As in, hitting the right arrow once steps forward only half as far as normal.

If you're editing MPEG (including HDV), you'll see this problem. Or any other interframe format -- WMV, AVC . . .

Also, if your footage timebase is different from your timeline, you many see this problem.

Or, if your timeline ruler is different from your footage timebase, you may see this problem.

That's probably what it is. Everything I'm editing is either DV or uncompressed AVI. I captured the DV at 24p (not that it matters), and the uncompressed AVI is all 24p.

I've changed the ruler on this thing like 20 times during the course of the project--back and forth from 29.97, 24, 23.97, seconds, time and frames, frames, etc...

This is my biggest vegas weakness. If I could figure out how to set all my measurements accurately, I'd be much better off.

You have to make sure the frame rate of the timeline matches, not just the ruler. You get BIG problems if they don't match each other.

Hmmm....well...any suggestions on ruler settings? I was always wondering what those settings meant--beats per minute, beats per measure, notes that get one beat...

Match it to your footage. If it's 24p, pick 23.976.

But again, make sure the frame rate of the timeline matches.
