Seeking Mic Opinions

My wife is wondering what is wrong with me, I haven't bought any new gear for a couple of months. I told her I would reduce her concerns.....

So I have a couple of Oktavas with cardoid and hyper caps, and they have done what I needed, but have always felt that I would prefer to move up...a little. I want a pair of better hypers and prefer to keep the total to around $1200.

Some products that come to mind:
AT4053B
AKG Blueline
Other suggestion

Soliciting opinions; do you feel that either of these, or something similar, would be enough improvement to justify the cost. I know this is subjective, but want to hear your opinion - experience.

Like a lot of small operators, I need versatility. Besides the normal indoor voice work, I do plan on shooting some music in the future, so higher sound levels might be a concern.

One more question, if you were going to spend the whole shebang on one hyper mic, what be on your short list?

Thanks in advance,
Grant

I already owned an Oktava and needed another mic to shoot a feature, so I bought an AT 4053. I have to say that, for nearly twice the money, I don't think it is twice the mic. It is a bit less sensitive to handling -that's the only advantage I saw. I found myself grabbing the Oktava more often than the AT.

The 4053B version is supposed to be improved and all wonderful, albeit at a hefty price. How much better I don't know. I don't know who coined this that there is an inverse square relationship regarding price and quality for the upper end of the market.

Thanks,
Grant

I want to bump this thread so here is a little different question about a upgrade.

I searched about but want to solicit more opinions.

Folks here sing praise about the CS3e all the time and that is has more uses than as a shotgun. Some have said it is a very good indoor mic and can serve the function of both a hyper and shotgun; The proverbial magic bullet

I recently purchased a NTG-3 and it is is a nice improvement over my older AT897. Given that I have Oktavas and RE50s also, would something like a CS3e help my interior dialogue over the oktavas? How would it compliment the NTG-3?

If you are now confused about my intentions....I really just want to make an improvement to my kit and am trying to gain versatility and quality at the same time. Better hyper performance is my most important goal. Either one really good mic or a pair of something lesser are both considerations.

Feel free to pick at me regarding my line of thinking.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts
Grant
