I'm looking for a little bit of help as I'm considering making the jump from a freelance videographer/editor to a full-time editor for a larger production company. I live in Charlottesville, VA and am interested in working as a full time editor in a larger city (Richmond, VA, Washington D.C., or possibly another city). I would really like to get some advice from people who have been editing professionally for a while as far as what their experiences have been like along with tips of what mistakes to avoid making. Also, do editors that are just starting out at these larger companies tend to make enough money to support themselves or is it usually necessary to get a 2nd job?
I've been editing on FCP for about 3 1/2 years professionally, but I'm considering learning another NLE because FCPX has gotten so much negative feedback among professionals. I own Premiere Pro CS5 when I bought the Adobe Production Premium for AE, and have considering learning that. However, I'm not really sure how many of the larger production companies use Premiere Pro or are planning to use it. I also have considered buying Avid Media Composer and learning it, but I'm wondering if that is mostly used in LA an NY or if there are production companies in smaller market cities that use it as well. Or, are a lot of these companies planning to stick with FCP 7 for several more years?
Any and all helpful advice would be greatly appreciated.
