See "Tangled Web" for FREE!

To be fair i think promoting this kind of stuff via facebook/google ads really is a waste of money. I think the uselessness of those two services in our field has been specifically discussed elsewhere on the site. Not saying dont promote/advertise, but do choose your medium carefully

Have you tried it and found it to be ineffective?

Good question.

To be fair, he refers to Facebook and Google "ads", which I assume means the paid ads. That seems to be an un-targeted, "scattergun" kind of marketing approach that may well not be effective. If I'm going to pay for an ad campaign, it needs to be narrowly targeted to the demographic that I believe will respond favorably to a movie like 'Tangled Web'.

Yes exactly.

My point was David has not tried ANYTHING that costs even a penny for marketing, as far as I can tell. He wants to self distribute, but that requires promotion and promotion usually costs at least some money. It's not all done for free. It appears David has only considered promotions that cost NOTHING.

Thats fair, but my experience aside i think there have been several discussions on here and other boards, maybe even a study of some kind or something similar, that say that very few or 0 people in the filmmaking/video production world see google or facebook ads convert to actual sales. All im saying is im recommending NOT making those your first venture into paid promotion for your film.

what would you recommend?

It's kind of hard to know if these people you are referencing just made horrible movies no one would want to see, or if they made fantastic movies everyone would want to see, but Facebook promotion just doesn't work. I mean, no amount of facebook promotion is going to sell a turd. On the other hand, business is spending 100's of millions of dollars on Facebook promotion so you'd think some of it does work.

Thats exactly it...everything ive heard/ read, at least as pertains to our industry, is that everyone TELLS everyone that social media promotion is the new big thing, but no one has any personal experience of actually making money from that type of advertising. Its like a big circle jerk, or one of those urban myths that always happens to "a guy who knew a guy a guy who knew my uncle".

unfortunately i have no recommendations...ive only done shorts myself and long ago gave up on making money on those (or paying to promote them).

In the past 3 months, I have received two footage licensing offers and commissioned an animator based upon work that was posted on social media. So it's not totally useless.

I get almost all my work from Facebook. But not advertisement on Facebook. It's from acquaintances and friends of friends and recommendations.
