Anyone have a way of getting your laptop to move with you without an assistant? I know a lot of you are tethered to the computer, as am I, so how do you stay mobile?
why would you CHOOSE to shoot tethered to a laptop - thats kinda nutty...
consider this. the laptop has to stay open to function. so you'll have to find a way to disable the physical device that detects the top closing. THEN get a backpack or shoulder bag that can secure the machine on the move THEN cut holes in the bag to allow the fw cable to pass through
wgzn, every modern laptop can be configured to not go to sleep when the lid is closed.
Regardless, I would not even try this. For DVCProHD recording, I'd use 16GB P2 cards or a FS-100 if you need more recording capacity than two cards can provide.
If you are talking about the Hydra, it will use a Ethernet cable, which seems much more robust than a 4-pin Firewire connection, and allows longer cable runs.
Another option would be to use the frame from a back pack. This would comfortably handle a laptop and a bunch of other stuff with good ventilation and easy access to the laptop -- you can even leave the display open:
