Seat of the pants lavalier shootout: Tram TR50 vs Audio Technica 899

I've been thinking I might like to have better lavaliers than my workmanlike AT899s. So I picked up a Tram TR50 from ebay. Put together a side-by-side test tonight, and I'm curious to know folks' thoughts.

Please excuse the 15 seconds of dead air at the head of it, and the not-exactly-clinical test environment, and most of all my rambly testing voice and purposeful mouth-noises. It's only about 00:01:27 in length.

My own impressions are that I can't hear a lot of difference between the two. That might be me having a tin ear--this I am prepared to accept.

Thoughts? Is this a useful way to test? I mean, I'm not much of a formal tester and I don't have a lot of rigor invested in this test, but it seems like it's somewhat reflective of the real life situations in which I might employ a lav.

Which mic do you like better?

the tram50 & the at899 sounded very similar.

i thought the at899 was a shade brighter/hotter but that is me using words to describe sound, a dubious task.

thank you for posting your efforts.

be well.

I appreciate your efforts Rob. On my monitors the Tram has smoother sounding upper mids and highs. The 899 picks up slightly less room and ambient BG noise. Just curious, what pre amp was used.
I have both of these mics, however both of mine 'been around the block a few times'. My (1st generation) 899 has a stiff cable which supposedly was changed on later manufacture. Most of my broken Trams have been replaced with OSTs.
