SDI to HDMI converter

I know that Black Magic makes a converter but I just saw several CHEAP (Chinese) converters on Amazon. Does anyone have any experience with these or can you suggest a converter that you have used successfully. I need a converter with embedded audio.

I've used the Monoprice ones. They are well built (all metal) and work well for green-room monitors. I've only been using them for a few months, we'll see if they survive the rigors of the road.

Black Magic has a new line of sdi-hdmi for $85 that is usb powered, can use the typical usb connection on the monitor.

We have a few of their mini convertors and they seem to work fine, on 24/7 for the part year. That said we have one of the old Seewell Direct USB powered convertors that was nice and cheap that we use in our studio control room and it has lasted fine too.

I have both versions of this (SDI->HDMI & HDMI->SDI) and they both work great. Carries embedded audio and record trigger, and is also one of the few that will work with 1080p60. Sold under various names in different countries and regions, but works everywhere from what I can tell. I love the touch of the LED power indicator being labelled "LED" instead of "POWER". It's an LED? Why, thank you.

Can those power from a USB port?
They're rated to 5v, so in theory yes. I doubt they draw much power so as long as you didn't have anything else pulling from the USB I bet it would work, but I have not tested this. You would have to find or make a cable.

Well, I went in a different direction. I bought a Magewell HDMI to USB 3.0 converter to take the video into my laptop. That way, I can save the video and use the laptop's LCD screen as a monitor.

Thanks to all of you for your input!

What kind of quality are you getting on the recording? What codec, etc.

Great quality. Reads the reviews.....very few negative comments. I just returned mine in exchange for the SDI to USB 3.0 version so I can also use it with my EX1 too. H.264 codec. 1920x1080 at 60P.

The guy who really knows the Magewell products is Tom Sinclair at EasternShoreBroadcasting.com. He is a great guy and will take time to help you! He also sells vMix which is an awesome product.

I'll have to pick one up, always nice to be able to throw something down for a quick recording when needed.
