SD302 TA3F to 1/8 mini stereo

I want to connect my SD 302 to FX1E and for matching levels I have to use the mixer's TA3 tape level output. Sound Device's only sell a 12 inch cable (XL3) and recommended that I have to wire one myself for longer lengths. Is it safe to do so ? Is there a maximum allowed lenght I should know ?
