I just received a book on Friday that clams to be a comprehensive guide for the digital age of film making. So far I have learned quite a bit!
I am working on putting together my first edit system that can work with HD. I am trying to make heads and tails of how best and most cost effectively to be able to check color. The book I am reading said that if you use a capture card that can in real time down convert HD to SD on the fly, you can use a NTSC/PAL broadcast monitor to accurately judge color and contrast.
It is one of those things, that once I read it, I understand why it could be true: Since the primary difference between a computer monitor and a tv/broadcast monitor is the input, RGB or YCbCr. It fits that judging color and contrast on a YCbCr device at 480x720 will be just as good as a YCbCr device at 720x1280 or 1080x1920. Knowing there is often more to the store then it first appears, I though I might get a second opinion. Is it true?
Assuming it is true, I assume the book is also accurate when it says that the resolution can be checked on the computer monitor.
Assuming it is true, any recommendations on a NTSC broadcast monitor to use for color and contrast checking?
As far as cards go, it looks like today the only viable option is the Blackmagic Design DeckLink HD Extreme card because I need Vista 64-bit support and it does not appear that any of the other manufactures of cards have 64-bit drivers yet.
