SD MM-1 to Tascam DR-40 How?

Hello Folks!

I've done a search and scanned thru many headers to posts and have not found how to properly do this.

Attenuator? How much...40db? Placed between MM-1 and DR-40 Will this be enough?

Looks to me it will take an XLR to 1/4 into the DR-40, to keep out the DR-40's Preamps.
As above, DR-40's Mic Gain Setting should be set to what setting?

I will be running an AT-897 into the MM-1.

I'm not versed in electronics, so here goes the Title question. So I post the following specs for you.

Many thanks!

Brian Depew

MM-1 Key Specs

Gain: (Mic - Line): 0 dB to 66 dB input to output, switch selectable

Dynamic Range: (Mic to Line) 122 dB minimum at the +18 dB gain settingGain Accuracy: (Mic - Line) +0.6, -0.1 dB with reference to front panel gain markings (150 ohm source, 100 k load impedances)

Output Clipping Level: (Line) +22 dBu minimum with 100k ohm load+20 dBu minimum with 600 ohm load

Input Clipping Level: (Mic) +4 dBu minimum at the 0 or +18 dB gain setting

I would not expect you to need a pad between the MM-1 and the DR-40. The MM-1 outputs a +4dBu nominal line level signal while the DR-40's line input is also rated for +4dBu nominal. Use an XLR-F->TRS balanced patch cable to connect the output of the MM-1 to the line input of the DR-40.

I have run a SD 302 directly into a DR-40 via the XLR inputs. The Tascam DR-40's input select switch must be set to 'EXT Line' and the Record mode software input menu must be set to 'EXT. IN' as well>.
I set the "DR40's line level gain to 4, which generally yields program peaks at around -6dB. The 302's limiter is on, and set to +17dB. For 'unattended' operation, I would suggest setting the levels a little lower, including the limiter, if that is user adj. on the MM. I assume the MM XLR output is referenced at 0dBu like other SD mixers.

Hi Rick!

Thanks for the help on the settings! tested it all out today while practicing with the video gear at the local airport and all works well!
